A guide to over the counter medicines in General Practice.

NHS England guidance advises that medicines available over the counter are generally not prescribed. Encouraging self-care helps make the best use of NHS resources. This guide outlines common over the counter (OTC) medicines and their use in primary care.

Patients may be prescribed a medicine even if it is available over the counter, for example if:

  • They need treatment for a long-term condition.
  • They require treatment for more complex minor illnesses, or if shop-bought medicines have not been effective.
  • They need medication to manage side effects of a prescription medicine or symptoms of another illness.
